Gameti (Rae Lakes)
Rae Lakes is
located on a fine trout fishing lake, halfway between
Great Slave Lake and Great Bear Lake, 177 air km north of
Yellowknife. This is a small, traditional community of
Dogrib Dene who still fish and trap for a living. The community is nestled between two lakes, Rae Lake and Lac Ste. Croix, part of the Camsell River system. Faber Lake, one of the larger lakes in western Northwest Territories, is close by. Rae Lakes is in a traditional hunting area of the Dogrib Dene, and on the main water route to Great Bear Lake. Today, Rae Lakes offers visitors a chance to meet a group of Dene who have chosen to live much as their ancestors did, relying on the land for food. Families still travel the land from their base in Rae Lakes, and from December to April, visitors can travel with the people. |
